Introduction
“I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough, we must do.” – Leonardo da Vinci
The world changed on September 11, 2001. I still remember what I was doing that day. I woke up in the morning and headed towards the University that I was attending to finish my Masters Degree, which is near Los Angeles International Airport. Normally I listen to the news, but for some unknown reason, I was listening to music on the radio instead. As I was driving on the freeway, it felt like something was wrong. Something was missing. After I found out about what happened in New York, I realized that what was missing was a lack of airplanes in the sky. It is kind of like wearing a watch or a wedding ring. You eventually forget that you have it on you until you need it.
Just like the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the shooting of JFK in 1963 or Neil Armstrong landing on the Moon in 1969, everyone alive at the time had a story to tell related to what they were doing the day something momentous, for good or for bad, happened to America. In the case of fulfilling President Kennedy’s call to action – “this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth.” On July 20,1969, our world did change. We proved that when we pull together as a nation, we can accomplish great things.
In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attack, Americans rallied behind President George W Bush. His approval rating soared to 90% (Gallup). The nation wanted the President to act… and act he did. He approved the invasion of both Iraq and Afghanistan, lowered taxes, and created the Department of Homeland Security whose task was to coordinate national security issues. As time passed, people’s moods soured, political tensions increased, and the national economy took a dive. When GW Bush left office, his approval rating was close to 25% (Gallup). As in 1969, our world changed. But did it change for the better? And is there anything we can do about it?
As time moved on, I had more questions than answers. How safe are we? Is the United States of America finished as a first world country? Is the quest for money and power stronger than the desire to help our neighbor? Can the Republicans and Democrats settle their differences and actually get something done that benefits the general population? Are we really running out of oil and other fossil fuels? Is green technology up to the challenge of solving problems related to housing, energy and transportation? And most importantly, can one person still make a difference or are we destined to mediocrity?
Some would think that person a fool who thinks that one person can actually change the world. There are over 6 billion people on this planet and you are but one person. From the international banks and corporations that own everything to the central governments who are making backroom deals, the common person is controlled, manipulated and taken advantage of. There is no possible way for one man (or woman) to achieve any type of success or justice. There are too many obstacles in the way.
It is all too easy to fall into this line of thinking. That someone is out to get you. That Big Business or Big Government is purposely and methodically keeping you down and preventing you from achieving your dreams.
“Even the one plan that was practicable, suicide, they had no intention of carrying out. To hang on from day to day and from week to week, spinning out a present that had no future, seemed an unconquerable instinct, just as one’s lungs will always draw the next breath so long as there is air available.” – Passage from George Orwell’s 1984
George Orwell’s 1984 is about a society ruled by a powerful elite that maintains control through government surveillance and mind control. Some believe that this Big Brother concept has become a reality. That we are but pawns in a cruel game of life. That there is no hope for a bright future.
This reminds me of a quote from French author and philosopher, Albert Camus, “In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.” The cure for despair is passion. If you are passionate about something, you will be willing to do what it takes to accomplish your goals and your mission. You will become greater than the sum of your parts.
It is true that there are obstacles in your way that prevent you from becoming successful – some real and some imagined. To learn how to overcome those personal obstacles that stand in your way, I highly recommend Left-Center-Right: What is BEST for America?.
Duplicitous takes a different path. Its primary goal is to educate you on the root causes of the social and political strife in our country. And on the flip side of this coin, I offer practical personal, professional and technical solutions and strategies that when implemented properly will empower you as an individual, a teenager, a corporation, a non-profit organization, or a politician to Create Real Social & Political Change in Our Nation Today!
Randy E. King has written nine books and has consulted many Fortune 500 companies on business and leadership strategies. Michael Beaumont has spent over two decades developing technical, training and marketing tools for individuals, entrepreneurs, and non-profit organizations. And together Randy and Mike have produced StoriesofUSA.com. This site is dedicated to learning about what it means to be American and how to become successful in America. Dozens of countries and thousands of people interact with this site on a daily basis.
Duplicitous has been defined as “deceitful and treacherous behavior.” Regardless of a person’s political philosophy, most Americans agree that this great Nation has a real problem. And part of that problem is the use of secrecy, unrestrained power, and backdoor deals that undermine the value and sovereignty of the United States of America.
This book is organized into three sections. The first section describes our public face as a Nation. The second section describes the darker, more sinister, and often unspoken dangerous side of an uncontrolled government, and the third section describes practical strategies on how to create real social and political change.
And at the end of the day, you will find out that You Can Make a Difference!
